Because the truth hurts
Two weeks ago i heard the david stern rumor that back in 93 when hockey got cool, he let bettman leave his NBA executive position to go run the NHL, knowing the guy was a screw up and would help the NBA by messing it up. I think Sports Guy is right, Stern is an evil genius.
(As an aside, i think buffalo is officially at an uneasy truce with Bettman. He screwed us out of the cup, but then saved the franchise from leaving buffalo in the adelphia scam. It’s like we’re marcellus wallace, bettman’s bruce willis, and the Rigas family was Zed & the gimp).
So now that the sabres are down 3-2 in the series, I can only imagine the panick back home. I posted this on a blog this morning, it bears repeating…
I moved out of buffalo/rochester last october, and I have to say living away from some of all this is nice. I watch all the sabres games (and bills), just enjoying them without that desperation edge of “this game means everything to the town” feeling that just gives people ulcers back home. Like you all said, this is the most fun (and talented team) I’ve watched come out of buffalo. They’ve played an incredible season and are built for the long term. There’s no shame for the city if it had to end tonight (I do like our chances tho).
For any of you that dont read bill simmons (the sports guy), you should. He rails against the old boston media who does nothing but antagonize the fans with gloom and doom just to boost ratings. This year isnt wide right, it isn’t no goal. It’s a great team that went from nowhere to the eastern finals (at least) and played a hell of a year.
Go sabres!

There’s few things more satisfying then blowing out the flyers and knocking them out of the playoffs, watching drunk fools in orange pout in the stands. I tell ya, if I could just bottle their tears and sell it on ebay.

Just getting these in under the wire, bare in mind I haven’t really paid any attention to the western conference.
Ottawa over TB in 5
Carolina over Mon in 6 (I really wanted to pick montreal here)
Rangers over Devils in 7 ( I Hope)
Sabres over Flyers in 5/6.
Detriot over Edm in 5
Dallas over Colorado in 6
Calgary over Anahein in 6
SJ over Nash in 4 (my token sweep pick)
I always knew gretzky married an actress, but i never knew how loose that defintion was. When you’re biggest movie was Police Academy 5, maybe you’re better classified as a gold digger.IMDB profile, she doesn’t even have a picture up. The guy from sol goode even has his picture up!
Yikes, so just as the NHL is ramping up, this whole gambling ring thing breaks. Bad bad news. Assisstant head coach finances gambling ring, current players names involved, ties to the mob. Christ.(Also, I’m still alive and lot’s of cool things are happening, I just haven’t felt like blogging lately).
Wow, tonight was one of those sporting events I’ll remember for a long time, up there with the Houston Comeback, Derek Plante in OT, and the Sabres run to the Stanley Cup. Tonight, RIT upset nationally ranked St. Lawrence (#18 in the nation), 3-2. They were outshot 68-14 (!) but the RIT goalie Giumond was all-world, stopping everything they threw at him, including 47 power play shots on goal. Simply unbelievable. I was yelling at my computer for the whole third period (including the tigers killing of a 5 minute major to start the third). Thrilling game, the biggest of the program by far, great day to be a fan.

Also, here’s a shot of my current work set up, complete with ergo keyboard & mouse, and dual 19” flat panel dells :).

Remember when Sopranos still had new episodes? One of last year’s (year before’s) ongoing plots was Christopher’s gradual slide into becoming a junky. Typical TV addiction, becomes useless, can’t function, ignores the one he loves, and refuses to admits anythings wrong. Then the intervention comes, wherin everyone in the room just beats the fuck out of him and puts him in the hospital. There he finally breaks down and realizes he’s a mess, and goes about fixing himself up, and going back to being his usual thug self.Well, the NHL is back, and dear god its beuatiful. The powers that be had to nearly kill the sport to fix it, but it’s what it honestly needed. Too many people “in the biz” thought the trap was never going away, it was a great idea to be like baseball and have only 3 teams compete, and that skill was just too diluted to have teams like back in the 80s anyway. Well, they finally got the Wayne Brady treatment they needed 12 years ago. Scoring is up, and more importantly, the game is flowing again. Guys fly through the neutral zone (with or without the puck), where they used to be grabbed and ridden into the boards. Defensemen can just grab on and drag on the back of forwards, so even 3rd line wingers can get creative with puck handling in the corners. Watching the Sabres play the Penguins* tonight was incredible, I was maybe 12 the last time I saw that much offense from Buffalo, back when mogiliny smoked, lafontaine was healthy and Grant Fuhr was trying to get intro Buffalo Country Clubs. Trust me, sit down and watch a game, it’s so much better it midas well be new sport.
*Crosby is for real. Just a great talent. Points in all his games so far, including 3 or 4 against Boston. But Vanek just might be better
